One of the main squares of Bruges, Burg Square is a spot to chill out and grab a bite to eat. A lively tourist attraction featuring buskers and a waffle caravan.

Bruges has a few main squares in the city. Burg Square is a smaller but more intimate main square with plenty of spots to sit down, chill out and grab a bite to eat. Spend at least a little while enjoying the shops and food, people watching, and see the sights. Tourists often drop by to grab some waffles from the caravan here. Plus, you’ll see a few big sights of Bruges like the Church of Our Lady and Basilica of the Holy Blood.

Known for its pretty and varied architecture, Burg Square has buildings from different centuries all packed into one place. From the Gothic style Stadhuis town hall to colourful Renaissance buildings, you see a lot of Bruges history immortalized in stone. If you’ve seen photos of Bruges and its clocktower before, you probably saw a glimpse of Burg Square. It’s very picturesque and worth visiting just to snap up a photo of the trip.

  • Farmers Market: drop by on a Saturday or Wednesday morning (8:30 to 13:30) to browse the Farmers Market. Discover local food, fresh produce, and yummy snacks.
  • Fun fact! There was actually a fortress here in the 9th century. There’s no trace of it now, but it’s good to know you’re stepping back into Bruges history with each step you take here. This is one of the earliest parts of the city.
  • Mistletoe and Wine: Burg Square has a good Christmas Market each year. Come and see the lovely decorations, listen to buskers and carol singers as you enjoy everything the food stalls have to offer.
