Citadel Park is no regular city park. Packed full of culture and art things to see, this park is close to Ghent’s centre and is home to a lot of its history too.
Once a citadel and barracks in the 1800s, Citadel Park is now a green culture oasis close to Ghent’s centre. Coming to Ghent via train? Take a quick walk from Ghent’s train station and pay a visit to Citadel Park. Popular with students as a meeting place and for picnics, especially in the spring and summer. But what you really want to see here are the artsy and cultural spots all around the park.
Modern Art Galore: Pay a visit to all the artsy sights on your walk around the park. Stop off at the City Museum for Contemporary Art (SMAK) for tons of modern art treats. Plus, Museum voor Schone Kunsten is just across the street if you prefer fine art.
Cycle Away: The indoor velodrome Citadel Park Velodrome (aka Kuipke) hosts the cycling event Six Days of Ghent every year. But you’re likely to find some kind of event, exhibit or gym activity happening on regular days.
Arch of History: just above SMAK by the smaller lake is Poortgebouw Citadel, a historical arch and photo point.
