A historical gem of Bruges, the 14th century Almshouse is a quiet and tranquil spot in the city that’s still used for social housing.

The Almshouse (Dutch: Godshuis de Vos) was built all the way back in the 14th century. Almshouses were usually run by the church to support the local community by giving free housing. They were the charities of the Medieval era. Built and funded by guilds, widows and the wealthy of Bruges, De Vos Almshouse is a piece of Bruges’ long history.

The Almshouse of Bruges is still used for social housing for the elderly today, so you can’t go inside any of the buildings. Still, it’s fully restored and kept in its original 14th century appearance to give you a historical experience on your travels. Relax in the garden and walk through the streets of the Almshouse to imagine what Bruges would have looked like all those years ago.
