Who said learning about the history of mining wouldn’t be fun? Check out the Flemish Mining Museum at be-Mine in Beringen. Wander through the interactive museum and learn all about the life of a miner. Tour the old, impressive mining buildings and follow in the footsteps of the miners that used to work here by going underground. The Flemish Mining Museum shows you every detail, even where they showered.

Where better to learn about this piece of Flander’s history than at one of the best examples of Limburg’s coal mining past. The city of Beringen has protected be-Mine, repurposing the old mining site into a diverse multi-purpose complex where you’ll find a bunch of adventurous activities, loads of history and even a shopping boulevard.

• To get the full mining experience opt for a guided tour of the underground simulation. This’ll cost you an extra 3€ per person. But it’s worth it as you get to visit a reconstruction of the old Berigen mine.
• A miner’s story: an iPod tour guides you around the museum through the eyes of Roberto Pasquali who actually used to work in the mines.
• Highlight: keep the kids interested by heading over to Avonturenburg after a museum visit. Climb the “mountain”, an old mining slag heap, to get a great view of be-Mine. Watch the kids tire themselves out as they scramble up and slide down this large, sloping playground.
