Take a stroll in a vibrant, UNESCO-protected beguinage full of history. Today, it's home to Leuven’s university.

Chances are you probably aren’t familiar with the concept of a Beguinage. So, quick recap?

In the 13th century, the Christian religious order of Beguines started in the Low Countries (i.e. present day Belgium and the Netherlands). Beguines were groups of women who chose to leave their old life behind and devote themselves to God. So… like a nun? Not quite: while the Beguines also took vows of chastity, they were allowed to keep their possessions. They chose to live in Beguinages (home of the Beguines), modest houses that they all collectively took care of.

So, are Beguines still a thing nowadays? Not really: the last Beguine died in the Flemish city of Kortrijk back in 2013. Their homes -- the Beguinages -- though, are still there, and they’re a wonderful testimony of what life used to be like for these devout women back in the days. Though Belgium has a few Beguinages you can visit, the Grand Beguinage is special for its super student friendly vibes. Take a walk around this historic gem of the city.

  • All around the country: there are Beguinages in every major Belgian city. But Leuven has two. The Grand Beguinage is one of the oldest in Belgium. It was founded all the way back in 1232. The houses you can see today, though, date back to the 16th century.
  • Thriving past: you’d be wrong to assume this Beguinage wasn’t a big thing back in the days: in the 18th century, it was home to about 300 beguines. But over the years, living in a Beguinage became less popular. The last beguine who used to live here died in 1988.
  • Student vibes: welcome to Leuven’s student community! A lot of the houses here are rented out to students and professors. Leuven is home to Belgium’s oldest university. Get a peek into local student life at the beguinage.
  • Insta-worthy: covering a surface of about 3 hectares, the Beguinage has about 300 apartments in almost 100 houses. It stretches on both sides of the river Dijle: the river splits into two canals inside the area, creating a sort of island - which is connected by bridges. Super cool!
  • Grand Beguinage by Candlelight: Every year around Christmas the Grand Beguinage is lit up by thousands of candles, illuminating shimmering Christmas spirit across the alleys of the medieval village! This year it will take place on December 11.
