Is green water actually a thing? It is in Mechelen. This canal has pretty green water caused by the nearby plants. Come and see this idyllic scene

Mechelen has a bunch of pretty cute places, but Green Water (Groen Waterke) is unique. The canal has green water because of the nearby plants and flowers that affect it. You won’t see another canal like it around.

Walk by the canal and view the water from the bridge. It’s the best spot to snap a photo of the canal as you’re walking through Mechelen.

  • Green Water is as pretty as a picture. There’s lots to see nearby too. While you’re on the bridge you can see Abbey of Saint Truiden and the Refuge of the Abbey of Tongerlo.
  • Did you know? Years and years ago the Mother Superior of the nearby beguinage once complained too many boats were sailing by on the canal. Thankfully, these days it’s a lot quieter!
