This funky, cool, unique modern art museum mixes art, history, philosophy and nature all into one.
Enter into the world of Belgian conceptual artist Koen Vanmechelen at this open-air museum. LABIOMISTA is a permanent but evolving, work of modern art representing Vanmechelen’s view on nature, society and life. His displays touch upon topics such as human rights, the environment and diversity, making them tangible through art.
The museum is built on the site of former Zwartberg Zoo (aka Limburg Zoo), the zoo director’s old mansion has been restored and now houses one of the museum’s exhibitions. It’s now called ‘Villa OpUnDi’ (which stands for the Open University of Diversity), here you can learn about the site's history and get an insight into Vanmechelen’s creative vision.
If contemporary art is your thing this is definitely a place to check out, especially if you’re looking for thought-provoking art. Even if it’s not so much your thing, the museum’s park is a cool location for a quick weekend walk with a difference.
LABIOMISTA does not have catering inside the park to encourage business in the local community. The museum recommends a few nearby places for you to get something to eat and drink, you can find the list here.
