Walk literally through the 1950s and discover the backbreaking work of mine-life in Belgium. Visit this outdoor site and museum and honour the memory of miners who lost their lives.

This site commemorates the victims of one of Belgium’s mining disasters in 1956 which caused 262 deaths. Opened to tourists in 2002, the site stretches 26 hectares, offering a trail taking visitors through the memory of the lost miners.

On your walk, you can view the sheet-metal mill, take a trip around the museums and tour the miner’s changing rooms and showers. Seeing preserved original buildings and machinery from the 1950s you can really immerse yourself in this historical site.

The site offers two main museums: the museum of industry and the museum of glass. In the museum of glass you can admire glass produced in Belgium in the 19th and 20th century. In the museum of industry you can learn about the lives of miners in this period and the functioning of Belgium’s mining industry more generally. One of the best insights into Wallonia’s history, this attraction is a must if you‘re in the area.
