All bookworms know it’s not hard to have fun when you’ve got a library card. Don’t miss this pretty restored monastery building, now city library and community hub.

Enjoy the peace and quiet at the city library. Inside a former monastery, Mechelen Library features beautiful wooden ceiling beams and tons of good books. Come here to chill and use the free WIFI or snap photos of the cool architecture.

The library still has tons of features of the monastery and even other restorations. Just look up at the ceiling in the corridor by the courtyard to see the marks of the past. Photography lovers should snap up the courtyard too.

  • What’s On: check online to see what lectures and workshops they’ve got on. From writing workshops and poetry readings to jazz music, you’ll find something to enjoy
  • Kid Friendly: kids should head over to the little play area on the ground floor. There’s plenty of children’s books (in Dutch) in the library too
  • Relax and Read: Grab a book and take a moment to relax. Sit up on the top floor to take in the atmosphere under the great wooden ceiling or grab a chair in their café Barbib
