Not quite a stairway to heaven, these 300+ steps take you to the top of Liege for city views you can’t get anywhere else.

The world’s #1 Most Extreme Staircase. These stairs will take your breath away. Literally! Climb up the 374 steps for a city view reward. The stairs are a symbol of the city and a must-do while you’re there.

The stairs are steep and the journey isn’t easy, but the view point from the top is worth it. Take breaks if you need it!

Why would someone build so many stairs? Well, it’s dedicated to 600 soldiers who sadly died in battle in the 15th century when they were defending Liege against the Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold. The more you know! Montagne de Bueren is named after Vincent de Buren, who fought in the battle to protect Liege against the Duke.

  • Sight by candlelight: the stairs are lit by candles on the first Saturday of October. There’s 20,000 candles decorating the city and taking the beautiful city views to the next level. Best at night!
  • Flower power: come by on the 6th and 7th of June every year to see 22,300 plants on the steps of Montagne de Bueren during the Bueren en fleur event.

This mountain of stairs is nothing like what I had seen before, the sight of it from the bottom is definitely more shocking than any picture I have seen before attempting the climb.

The climb turned out to be way more demanding than I had expected. I knew it was worthwhile to take on this challenge once I set my eyes on the panorama of the beautiful city.
