Photography lovers need to check out this photo museum. It’s got socially and culturally relevant exhibitions, plus two cinemas.

The museum opened in the 1980s and has displayed contemporary photography for all to enjoy ever since. It’s an interactive museum with all kinds on offer.

There’s a permanent display featuring the history of photography, but what you really want to see here are the exhibitions so make sure you check ahead of time what tickles your fancy. As we know not all art is alike for everyone. The exhibitions change every four months and they’re always socially and culturally relevant.

  • FOMU has four floors and each has their own topic. Not every level is open at the same time, check ahead to see what’s on.
  • They have a library that the public has some access to. You get to browse photography magazines and bathe in the creative atmosphere - some people come in and work here for a bit. The magazines are interesting to read, but your choice is limited to just those.
  • FOMU is a must-see for photography lovers, but everyone will love their cosy cinemas that screen practically every day. They screen movies of various languages. Subtitles are specified on the cinema’s website.
  • The museum is in the Zuid district. You’re close to contemporary museum M HKA and there’s plenty of cafes nearby.
  • Don’t miss the Warerpoort arch, a landmark from the 1600s, that’s just down the street. The designer of this former water gate is unknown, although some speculate it was Flemish painter Rubens.
