Stroll down the prettiest streets in Zurenborg and enjoy the city’s grand late 19th century Art Nouveau architecture at its height
Villas, mansions, townhouses and just more pretty houses than you could ever hope to see in a quirky, amazing art nouveau style. Walking along Cogels Osylei and the surrounding streets is basically like walking into an architecture gallery only it’s outside so you get Vitamin D while you’re at it.
Antwerp is more than its centre and shopping district (although we love those too!) Cogels Osylei and its nearby streets is a must see for all lovers of architecture. Most of the villas were built around 1894-1908, so the Art Nouveau style is in full bloom.
- Art Nouveau means you’ll see mosaics in the walls, pretty keyhole windows, and fancy ironwork.
- It’s beautiful and lively because it’s inspired by nature - you’ll see the curves of flowers and the asymmetry of nature featured throughout every street.
- The houses are all residential and you can’t actually go inside the houses. But seeing the outside is enough to have that wow factor.
- The Golden Triangle (Cogels Osylei, Transvaalstraat & Waterloostraat) has 170 houses that are all so gorgeous and all protected by the Flemish government.
- Want to take a break from walking? At the end of the street you’ll find a few restaurants and cafes or keep going until you’re in the main square of Zurenborg - it’s one of the trendiest spots in Antwerp.
- Need more fresh air? Antwerp ZOO is just a short drive away or check out the bridge at Park Spoor Noord for even more cool architecture
