Face the 400+ steps or take the cable car to reach the top of the Citadel of Dinant. Stroll the gardens and take a boat ride along the river

Planning a visit to Dinant? You literally can’t miss the Citadel. Towering over Dinant on the rock behind the “Notre Dame the Dinant” church, the Citadel of Dinant is a must-visit for history buffs and view hunters.

The best views

Take a cable car ride to reach the very top of the citadel for the best views. Wanna take courage into your own hands? Climb 408 steps to the very top. The view at the end is worth it, we promise. But no matter the journey, the destination is the same. See a panoramic view 100m above the river Meuse.

  • Boat ride: cruise along the river Meuse for views of the Citadel and city of Dinant. It’s a 45 min round trip starting right in the city centre, along the river, to the village of Anseremme and back. Get the 3 in 1 combo ticket for the best savings as the boat ride isn’t included in the standard Citadel ticket.

  • Family day out: bringing the family for a day out at the citadel? Keep the children entertained with a free booklet activity (only in French) you can find on the citadel website here.

Learn all about the past

Inside the Citadel: head into the Citadel of Dinant for history deets. The Citadel has seen many battles. Dinant’s first fortifications date back all the way to the 9th century. The big ol’ impressive citadel you see these days is from 1815. One highlight for history buffs is the battle of 1914 exhibit that has an interactive model of the citadel, plus info on the battles.

The combo ticket doesn’t cost too much more if you have extra time to spend for the boat ride.
  • Do the trek if you physically can, we highly recommend it.
