Take a stroll through one of Prague’s most lush and historical areas, the Olšany Cemetery, in Zizkov.

You wouldn’t expect a cemetery to be a relaxing place for a walk or to visit. Well, Olšany Cemetery is totally unique. Because of its lush space, climbing ivy, and Art Nouveau monuments this cemetery isn’t so ordinary. Some say the clearly marked lanes make it resemble the famous Pere Lachaise in Paris.

You’re probably thinking it’s kinda strange to walk through a cemetery, right? Well, it’s not your conventional activity to do but the combination of the Art Nouveau beauty and the history behind Olšany actually makes it pretty popular.

Walking around the cemetery the different seasons really come to life. Fall is definitely one of the best times because of the change in colour on all the trees and plants that complete the cemetery.

  • This cemetery dates back to 1680 when it was used for plague victims. Because the cemetery was out of the city limits, bodies were allowed to be buried here.
  • It wasn’t until the late 20th century when Art Nouveau grave monuments started popping up that it became a sight for tourists to come visit.
  • Some say there are over 2 million people buried here and over 65,000 grave sites. Definitely not your ordinary cemetery.
  • The Art Nouveau monuments are relatively new and are very much worth checking out while walking around the area.
